Last comment… I’ve always been curious if our generosity is high because our social services are low. Maybe other countries don’t need so many nonprofits to do the work because their government does it? Their taxes are higher to pay for those services so they are all paying for the social services.

And a follow up thought… perhaps centralized government services are more efficient and more effective and that would also necessitate lower donations to charities.

Good point -- I haven't investigated the direction of causality (I would expect it to be circular, actually). Bottom line: Our current mix of government and private services is inadequate if our goal is to reverse the growth of inequity.

I haven’t yet read the post but the first graphic is bold and so important! We are a big country and the realities so easily get lost in the big news of the day but the numbers never lie. There are serious issues in this country and these statistics tell us a story that belie our perception of life in America.
